Reviews

"Roger Wilson is a highly talented fiddle player and singer/songwiter. He is impressive not only for his extraordinary talent as a songwriter and musician, but as a brilliant and passionate interpreter of traditional and contemporary material, notably for his memorable rendition of Hey Joe by the late great Jimi Hendrix. Roger uses the charged combination of fiddle and voice to full effect to convey the emotion of traditional songs. His enthusiastic playing and love of his craft are inspiring."

Roger Wilson

Roger Wilson is a singer, fiddler, guitarist, songwriter and folk musician. He is a widely respected figure on the folk and acoustic music scene, both in Britain and around the World.

To many Roger is best known as a former member of The House Band, with whom he was fiddle player and singer for five years, and for his collaborations with Martin Carthy (Wood, Wilson, Carthy), Kate Rusby (the Concert Party), Pete Morton (Urban Folk) and John Tams (The Royal National Theatre).

A young and inspired Roger Wilson began his musical career in 1986, when he gave up his career as a graphic designer to take the plunge as a soloist on the UK folk scene, and made the move to London. From there began a lifetime of gigging and recording that has been pretty much constant ever since, except when he got really skint once and had to dig other people's gardens for a living. Nowadays he is based in his home town of Leicester, England, and doesn't even dig his own very often.

Roger has made two solo albums to date. The Palm of Your Hand, released in 1988 on Harbourtown Records, and in 1994 Stark Naked, which featured his own songwriting for the first time.

At present Roger is working on his next album project, Little Back Room. The new songs are being performed regularly by Roger solo, and occasionally with the musicians involved in the recordings. So far these have included Ian Carr, Dan Britton, Neil Segrott, Richard Latham, Pete Kubryck Townsend, Russell Jalland Graham Summers, Rob Woodfield and Joel Evans.

At one of Roger's current gigs you can expect to hear a diverse mixture of folk songs, original songs, covers, adaptations, and the occasional funky fiddle tune. Here's a thing from one of England's finest musical organisations.
